Built for Women - Fee Free training

The NSW Government has announced at the end of April that it will support 3,000 training places for women in trades to help boost female representation in construction, manufacturing, engineering, transport and logistics. The fee-free Built For Women training program will target women aged 16 to 24, female jobseekers, women at risk of unemployment and women in receipt of Commonwealth benefits. This is coupled with the Job Trainer program which has 154 full qualifications and 408 part-qualifications available in the construction industry will aim to attract women into rewarding careers into trade industries that are experiencing skills shortages

The NSW Government program will also assist in changing the social perceptions of the industry, as many still perceive some industries are viewed by wider society as being “masculine” and this is impacting the career choices of female school leavers. According to Verto, a leading apprenticeship provider, parents are actively talking their daughters out of trades with the main reasons cited as “being added risk in a male environment, dirty work and heavy lifting” and therefore putting a label on the industry in the early stages of career options. The initiative with support from industries and businesses will support the transition of attracting more female candidates into male-dominated roles.
