Protect yourself while shopping online this Black Friday Weekend

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this week millions of Australians will take to the internet to try and get the best deal or save some money on their Christmas shopping. Whilst it is great to get a good deal, it is important to make sure you are protecting yourself while shopping online.  With an increase in online shopping there have also been an increase in scams, there have been reports of over 2,760 fake online stores this year alone, with the Australian government reporting that online shopping scams have cost Australians over $6.2 million between 1 January and 30 September 2023.

Below are a few simple ways to help protect yourself from online shopping scams.

Only shop on trusted websites.

When shopping online it is safest to independently search the desired website opposed to following a link from social media or sent via email or SMS. By following these links there is a higher chance of being taken to a fake retail website designed to mimic an official site. By independently searching for the website, you reduce the chance of buying from one of these fake webstores.

Additionally, you should check the webpage is secure by looking for the locked padlock icon at the very left of the URL bar, which lets you know the information you provide is encrypted and https:// in front of the web address.

Use secure payment methods.

The Australian government recommends using PayPay or credit cards where possible as these are more secure payment methods and offer a level of protection if something goes wrong. It is also recommended to set up a second card with a low credit limit specifically for online shopping is possible to help limit financial losses if your card details are compromised. Prepaid visa and mastercards may incur a small fee but can provide you with a secure card and therefore peace of mind.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Many fake webstores sell familiar products, brands, and luxury goods at significantly lower prices. In some instances, you may receive a fake version of the product, in other cases you won’t receive the product at all. If you are unfamiliar with a website or unsure if a website is selling authentic products it is best to search for independent reviews prior to purchasing from them or providing any personal information.
